Jamshedpur, Oct. 16: Safe Diwali was the buzzword on campus today.
Schools of the steel city organised rallies and awareness programmes to inform students and parents about a safe Diwali.
ADLS Sunshine School organised Diyotsav to entertain as well as guide the students. If food mela, cultural programmes, rangoli and Diwali ghar competition kept the students amused, talks on safety measures and guidelines enlightened them.
“It is necessary to make children aware of the safety measures while bursting crackers. Every year, burn cases come to the fore and maximum victims fall in the age category of six and 15 years. So, we thought of coming up with this awareness programme,” said Saurabh Srivastava, a doctor at the burn unit of Tata Main Hospital (TMH), who told the students what to avoid on this day.
Srivastava added that the burn unit at TMH faces a shortage of beds on this day every year. Hand and eye burns are the most common cases on Diwali.
The students of the school learnt about some of the basic, quickest and easiest ways to keep away from accidents.
The motive of the programme on the eve of Diwali was to inculcate safe thinking among parents and students. Students were asked to use eco-friendly crackers that emit less smoke.
“Most of us know what to do but we generally avoid them. Since school is where children learn, we have taken the responsibility of teaching them about safe Diwali to make the day more enjoyable. You can’t keep children away from crackers but we can always teach them the right ways to enjoy,” said Indrani Singh, the principal of ADLS Sunshine.
The Kerala Samajam Model School organised a rally on Thursday to spread awareness on noise and air pollution. The rally was based on the theme — safe and pollution free Diwali.
About 50 students participated urging people to use eco-friendly crackers.
