Ranchi, Jan. 24: Ranchi Women’s College (RWC) will get it but Doranda College might have to wait a bit longer.

Ranchi University vice-chancellor A.A. Khan told The Telegraph today that they had submitted the application to University Grants Commission (UGC) for autonomy of RWC a few days ago.

“Soon, the UGC team will visit RWC. The college was shortlisted along with Ranchi College, but has not been granted autonomy as yet,” Khan said.

UGC has already conferred autonomous status on three constituent colleges of Ranchi University — Jamshedpur Women’s College, Ranchi College and Marwari College, Ranchi.

Khan added that the college would become a hub of quality education after getting its autonomy. “The UGC would also give a grant of Rs 45-Rs 75 lakh after granting the status,” Khan added.

“After RWC gets the autonomy, we would try for Doranda College. We think we have to wait till the science block of the college comes up,” he pointed out.

RWC principal Manju Sinha could not be contacted for her comment.

Principal of Doranda College Ram Parvesh said: “We do not claim to be the best college, but we are on the path of progress by developing our infrastructure. The autonomous status would be a boost.”

“The construction of our science building was stopped mid-way due to rate revision. The new estimate has been submitted and fresh tenders would be invited from bidders,” Parvesh said.

He pointed out that for autonomy, the college will need well-equipped laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology. “Currently we have two laboratories for physics and chemistry but it is not adequate for our students,” he said.

According to UGC norms, autonomy can be granted to at least 10 per cent of colleges in India. St Xavier’s College, Ranchi, was the first college in the state to enjoy autonomous status in 2006. UGC also bestowed the college with Potential for Excellence (CPE) status in 2006 along with a grant of Rs 50 lakh.
