Ranchi: The alleged abductor and rapist of a 15-year-old minority community girl from Gumla, who had fled from police escorts on a train on Friday afternoon, was nabbed on Saturday morning, ending the high-voltage drama over the case whose alleged inept police handling angered chief minister Raghubar Das at Seedhi Baat on October 31.
A police team, which had photographs of Anwar Khan, 24, found him walking at Kusdaha More in Bharno in Gumla, 35km from district headquarters and 60km from Ranchi.
While being brought back by police on transit remand on a train to Gumla from Karnal in Haryana, where he had kept the minor girl captive at a relative's place, Anwar on Friday jumped off the train at Navinagar in Bihar near Garhwa on the pretext of going to the loo.
It is not clear how he got his handcuffs off or managed to get off a speeding train.
The case goes back to September 4, when the 15-year old girl of Chainpur in Gumla had complained co-villager Anwar had abducted and raped her and thrashed her when she resisted.
Her FIR was registered under different Sections of IPC and POCSO Act at Chainpur police station. But, the accused remained traceless even though a Gumla court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him.
Again on October 26, the victim's mother lodged another FIR at Chainpur alleging that her daughter has been abducted by accused Anwar and his father Karim Khan. Her FIR was registered under different Sections of the IPC and the investigations began. These cases also turned up at chief minister Raghubar Das' Seedhi Baat on October 31. The chief minister lost his cool when then Gumla SP Chandan Jha could not give satisfactory answers.
Das publicly questioned Jha's competence and ordered his transfer after a few hours. Anshuman Kumar replaced Jha.
South Chhotanagpur DIG A.V. Homkar, asked to give special focus to the case, formed two special investigation teams for the girl's rescue.
The girl and Anwar were traced to Kutail village in Madhuban thana of Karnal district in Haryana.
A Gumla police proceeded to Karnal on November 5 and the accused was arrested and the victim rescued with the help of Karnal police on November 7.
