Jamshedpur, Aug. 26: The college experience is set to change for students of two city colleges as the authorities introduce the rule of blackboard.

Come September and Jamshedpur Workers? College (JWC) and Jamshedpur Cooperative College (JCC) ? the two co-educational constituent colleges of Ranchi University in the steel city ? will introduce a new system of vigilance to keep a watch on students, especially girls.

Explaining the vigilance system, sources in the two colleges said they have planned to introduce a system that will make it mandatory for every girl student to state the time, date and reason behind her absence from the campus, especially during free periods.

The reason has to be put up in writing on the blackboards in the common rooms of the two colleges. The move, the authorities hoped, will help them as well as guardians track down the youngsters.

?In the past, we have come across several cases of parents getting worried when they failed to find their daughters on the college campus. The college authorities, too, face difficult situations when they fail to explain the whereabouts of some student to her parents.

?So, we have decided to make it mandatory for girls to write a note on the blackboard in the common room when they leave the campus,? explained S.S. Razi, the principal of JWC.

The principal, who recently visited Carmel College, Bangalore, has borrowed the idea from there.

Now that the plans have been made and the authorities are hopeful of a positive outcome, the million-dollar question is whether the system will work. The students, it seems, are not so sure.

A first-year student of JWC, requesting anonymity, argued: ?What happens when a girl leaves the campus with her boyfriend stating she is out to meet a sick friend? It is easy to implement the idea, but is it pragmatic??

Neha Kumari, a B.Com Part II student of the same college, struck a more negative note. ?In all probability, the system is not going to work effectively. How can you guarantee that students will give the real reason for leaving the campus? They might bluff,? she said.

It seems that the authorities are aware of the loopholes but are willing to take a risk.

?One cannot expect a school environment in colleges. The college students are expected to be mature with an understanding of their responsibilities. We expect transparency from them and hope that the system will work out,? explained a senior official of JCC.

?But, once the students put up a note on the blackboard, it will become easier for the parents to locate her,? the official added.
