Ranchi, May 9: As many as 52,915 cases arising out of accidents that took place in different parts of the state were disposed of and around Rs 72.63 crore was disbursed among beneficiaries during a mega lok adalat held in the capital today.

Pramod Kumar, one of the beneficiaries, walked home with Rs 2 lakh as compensation for the death of his brother.

Kumar's brother, who was the only earning member in the family, had died in a road accident in 2010. A claims case was filed before the tribunal in Jamshedpur, which had ordered for payment of the money. However, the tribunal's order was challenged in the high court. Subsequently, the case was referred to the lok adalat.

"It has been quite long and we had to go through a hard time as the family was under an acute financial crisis. This money will help us tide over the hard times," Kumar said.

The lok adalat was especially organised for disposing of cases arising out of motor vehicles accident claims.

The claims are decided by the tribunal. If parties involved do not accept the decision, they can appeal before the high court.

Jharkhand High Court Legal Services Committee chairman and judge R.R. Prasad said the lok adalat was an effective tool to clear pending claim cases.

"Often these cases remain pending for years altogether with litigants getting little respite. The lok adalat is a quick solution as the cases are disposed of in a day and beneficiaries get their dues. Insurance companies have also played an important role in this regard," he said.
