Jamshedpur, May 29: Supercop Kiran Bedi and actress Shabana Azmi are likely to attend the first anniversary of Mukti, a rehabilitation programme which is under way in Sakchi jail.

According to Vinod Kumar Singh, president, Nagrik Abhiyan Suraksha Samiti (NASS), which started the rehabilitation programme, the organisation was trying to get the duo for the programme scheduled for October. Singh said NASS tried to contact Kiran Bedi in New Delhi but could not speak to her as she was away in New York on an assignment.

“We spoke to her daughter who told us that Bedi was in the United States. We were planning to organise the first anniversary of Mukti in June but could not do so as Bedi was still to be contacted. Her daughter said Bedi would return to the country in October,” Singh added. He said NASS was optimistic that Bedi would attend the programme. “Bedi has started several rehabilitation programmes in Tihar jail. She attends rehabilitation projects conducted by several social organisations in different jails of the country,” Singh said. The organisation is also trying to rope in actress and social activist Shabana Azmi for the celebrations. “We would contact Shabana Azmi and request her to attend our anniversary programme. We have spoken to a close acquaintance of Shabana who has given us positive signals,” Singh said. The products made by the undertrials are sold in the market and the money is deposited in their bank accounts.
