Ranchi: Inching a step closer to become a centre of academic excellence, Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University has introduced research-oriented project work for undergraduate students.

Fifth semester students of BSc (Honours) in computer application and cyber security and forensic science have been asked to submit their proposals by July 15.

The students will have to concentrate on local issues of public interest and give suggestions after critical analyses.

They can form groups of 4-6 under a team leader to conduct the research. The maximum duration for each project, for which the varsity will grant Rs 25,000, will be four months.

Registrar M.K. Jamuar said the initiative would enable students to innovate and help the varsity prepare a database on local issues.

"These projects will introduce students to advanced research work, the opportunity that they usually get after securing postgraduate degrees. The other day, I was attending a seminar where the scholars emphasised on carrying out advanced researches on cataract found in fish in Netarhat waters. I couldn't understand how this was going to help a commoner in Ranchi or Jamtara. Our researches should focus on finding a cure to local issues," he said.

Jamuar said the proposed national university for police in Delhi had decided to follow the Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University model. "We are extending them the necessary support," he added.

On reports of graduates being duped by placement agencies, he said there was some confusion related to the placement drives initially, but the issues had been sorted out. The university now has its own placement cell and the students have been told that merely securing a degree from the varsity do not guarantee decent jobs in police, army or any other government agency.

"The state government has now notified that weightage would be given to Raksha Shakti University degree holders in police jobs of non-gazetted ranks. Private placement agencies have started approaching us for hire new recruits. Further, the 2016-17 graduates, who had claimed to have been cheated by the Chennai-based security agency who had hired them, quit their jobs without informing anyone. They never approached us," Jamuar said.
