Dhanbad: A three-member team of assessors from Medical Council of India (MCI), which inspected facilities at Patliputra Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) on Monday, were still unhappy over faculty crunch here, admitted its principal, but added remedial plans were underway.

Principal Dr Shailendra Kumar Singh said Monday's inspection was carried out to verify the compliance report of shortcomings pointed out during the last inspection held on February 6 for continuation of 50 seats at PMCH.

The MCI team comprising head of ophthalmology North Bengal Medical College, Siliguri (Bengal) Rabindra Nath Saha; professor and head of preventive and social medicine department of Medical College, Baroda (Gujarat) Vihang S. Mazumdar; and professor of department of anatomy of Government Medical College, Haldwani (Uttarakhand), reached PMCH at 9am. Then, they visited anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, preventive and social medicine, medicine, skin, paediatrics, surgery, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, radiology, ophthalmology, ENT, gynaecology, obstetrics departments, the burn ward, the newly constructed auditorium and library building.

Principal Dr Singh pointed out the ventilation facility had been put in the neonatal care unit of paediatrics ward after the MCI team earlier pointed out the lacuna.

He said during the last MCI inspection, faculty vacancy was 56 per cent. This has lowered to 20 per cent at present. But the MCI team on Monday said even that was too high and 10 per cent was tenable.

On this, Dr Singh said last week some senior residents had been hired by health department but those appointments had not yet been notified. "I think once appointments are notified, our vacancy figure will be around 10 per cent," he said.
