Jamshedpur, Feb. 28: Destiny’s child, er, sapling, will now get its very own address.

The banyan planted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his 2008 visit to Tata Steel during the centenary celebrations of the steel major will now be planted in a new park on the sprawling Jubilee Park, close to Jayanti Sarovar.

Jusco, a subsidiary of Tata Steel, is developing the five-acre park christened Shatabdi Udyan, which will host the historic banyan.

“The park is being developed to preserve the banyan sapling that is currently kept at the Jubilee Park nursery. It was a historic occasion when the Prime Minister arrived here to attend Tata Steel’s centenary celebrations. We want to preserve that memory,” said a Jusco official.

The official also said that the park would be a unique fusion of manmade and natural beauties. Dotted with three concrete sculptures replicating the work culture at Tata Steel, the park will also have a waterfall, a rain shelter, a fountain, an aquarium and landscaped pathways. It will also display a variety of lilies and other seasonal flowering plants. Workers of Jusco’s horticulture department are busy in greening and landscaping activities.

Chief architect of Jusco Jatinder Singh said the park would be ready for inauguration in the next one month. “We had planned to gift the park to steel city residents on Founder’s Day, that is on March 3. But there is still some work left, which we hope to complete by next month,” said Singh.

According to Singh, it would be a new attraction for visitors. “We are taking care to ensure that the park looks fresh and attractive. The entrance is also going to be an eyecatcher. It will have a plaque like the one existing near the statue of JN Tata,” he added.

Jamshedpur-based sculptor Subhendu Biswas said he had been working on three figures — two men and a woman — for the past six months. “They are realistic human figures with an artistic distortion. The sculptures depict Tata Steel workers in three stages and I am sure they will be appreciated by visitors. I am trying my best,” he said.
