From being a pipe dream, piped water will soon be a reality at 10,000 Sindri homes.

The Dhanbad Municipal Corporation (DMC) on Sunday hosted two camps at Gaushala in Sindri and Mohan Bazaar in Patherdih to seek applications for tap connections.

Mayor Chandrashekhar Agarwal, deputy mayor Eklavya Singh, municipal commissioner Binod Shankar Singh, executive engineer Indresh Shukla, executive officer of DMC's Sindri circle Sukra Murmu and others collected a total of 300 applications.

From Monday, the forms would be accepted directly at the DMC office. Once the application count touches 2,000, the civic authorities will begin distributing piped water.

"We will give connections to all who apply. Camps will be organised next weekend while residents can also submit their applications at our office in Sindri from tomorrow," executive engineer Shukla said.

Barring BPL families, others will have to deposit a fee of Rs 4,000 at the DMC account in the Sindri branch of SBI. For BPL candidates, the connection will be free of cost.

"Apart from the fee, photocopies of identity and address proofs, the holding tax receipt and water meter proof will also have to be submitted with the application," said Shukla.

Sindri will get Damodar water under a Rs 365-crore JNNURM scheme. The project, for which work began in 2011, is divided into two phases - Sindri and Jamadoba.

At Sindri, a 19 million litre tank on the banks of Damodar in Rangatand and laying of 84km pipeline was completed last year. The Jamadoba phase is eyeing debut in March 2016.

"Ninety per cent work of laying pipeline for 264km is complete. We are facing encroachment problems between Bashir More and Siyaljori in Putki on NH-32," said Shiv Nath Ram, the executive engineer of the state drinking water and supply department. He added that out of the 36 water towers 32 have already been constructed while the intake well of 183 million litre capacity is also ready. "The water treatment plant is also nearing completion," said Ram.
