Oct. 11: For the first time, India Post has entered the express cargo segment in Jharkhand by launching Logistics Post for delivering consignments.
The department of post has plans to equip itself with around 1,200 trucks and four aircraft for transporting logistics within the country, including Jharkhand.
The trucks would be taken from Tata Motors on the lease.
In addition to hiring the transport vehicles, India Post will procure aircraft to deliver consignments across the country. One of the planes will be given to Jharkhand by the postal department for swift transportation of consignments.
The basic concept behind logistic post is that the parcels weighing over 35kg and upper limit will be delivered at the customer’s doorstep after the van carries to its respective places.
In the first phase the service will be available in Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Ramgarh, Gola, Bokaro, Chas and Dhanbad.
Chief postmaster general A.S. Prasad inaugurated the logistic post service at Doranda post-office this evening, while Jharkhand postal circle (director) Anil Kumar launched the same service at Bistupur head post office in Jamshedpur in the morning.
Kumar said that earlier the customers used to face problems if the parcels were overweight as it could not be delivered. But the new service would made the entire process quick and easy, he added.
“In Jamshedpur, we recorded three parcel bookings worth Rs 11,000. Besides, the department also hired 16 private agents for marketing. They will be paid on the commission basis ranging 5 to 10 per cent. If the parcel reaches post-office before 12 noon, it will be delivered on the same day,” he added.
