Daltonganj: Nilamber-Pitamber University (NPU) at Medininagar has formed a committee to finalise the dress code for the convocation to be held in the first week of October.

Addressing reporters here on Thursday, vice chancellor S.N. Singh said, "We have asked the committee to keep the attire simple in tune with the tradition of Palamau and Jharkhand."

Singh said the purely traditional costume would be suitable to students of all communities.

The moves comes following a directive from the governor's secretariat asking universities to discard the colonial gown and opt for a traditional Indian dress code.

The VC said the head gear for students and dignitaries would also be decided by the panel.

"We have seen samples of safa, a kind of pagri which is easy to wear. But that too will be decided by the committee," he added.

He said the university was toying with the idea of finalising kurta and pyjama for boys and salwar suits for girls but that, too, would be decided by the committee.

Singh, who was accompanied by pro-vice chancellor P.K. Poddar, said the university would welcome suggestions on costumes.

In the meantime the Governor's secretariat has allowed this university tohold its convocation in the first week of October.

Elaborating this VC said we had written to Governor's secretariat in which we had proposed this convocation to be held in the last week of October but we are now allowed to hold it in the first week of October itself and that well will do by all means.

He said university officials here had been asked by the governor's secretariat to hold its maiden convocation in the first week of October.

To finalise the chief guest for the occasion, it is incumbent upon the university to send a list of four names to the governor's secretariat. The four names suggested by the varsity are vice-president Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Union HRD minister Prakash Javadekar and Union minister of science and technology Harsh Vardhan.

Varsity sources said around 1,000 students have applied for degrees.

"There are a lot of students who need their degrees urgently for jobs. We are issuing degrees to such students so that they do not miss the opportunity of joining a job," Singh added.

Sources said the convocation would be held at the GLA college ground here since it is close to the headquarters of 134 battalion of CRPF.
