Waiting for hours in long queues to collect and submit forms will be a thing of the past at Jamshedpur Women's College that is embracing an online model to transform its admission system in line with other major institutions of the country.

The 61-year-old college, with over 6,000 students from the steel city and its neighbourhood, has begun admissions in M.Ed, one of the first courses to be opened up for applications from students online, and a few other subjects.

In the new session, the two-year M.Ed course will have 50 seats, compared to the 35 earlier.

M.Ed apart, add-on courses like banking and human rights and duties and value education admission links have also been uploaded on the automated system, the link to which is on the college website - www.jsrwomenscollege.ac.in.

"Girls used to stand in queue under the sun for long hours. The online system will make it easier for students. When they register, students will automatically get a user id and password which can be used to track their application," said Kakoli Basakh, a faculty member.

After getting their user id and password, candidates will have to upload passport-size photographs. They will then receive two PDF files with acknowledgement and a challan. These will then have to be used to pay the course fees at the college branch of Bank of Baroda to complete the process.

The college is exploring options of setting up a payment gateway for online transactions.

Jamshedpur Women's College received conditional autonomy from UGC for the second time in November 2014.

From June, students keen on pursuing under graduate and vocational courses will also have to apply online as the college will soon upload the entire admission process on its website.

Kolhan University also adopted an online admission system last year.

"These days everything takes place in the virtual world. There are so many other colleges that have also simplified the admission process. It will help Jamshedpur Women's College too as errors will be minimised," Basakh added.
