Two close friends were found hanging in an under-construction home in Jugsalai on Thursday evening, the single rope with two nooses pointing to a suicide pact.

Mukesh Gupta (26) and Vikas Gupta (27), small-time businessmen, friends and residents of Shiv Ghat Road, Jugsalai area, left behind a partially empty bottle of whiskey, a bottle of water, two glasses, traces of vomit and a suicide note.

The note, written by Vikas, suggested he was distraught over his cousin Guddi's suicide in Allahabad some months ago.

The note also spoke about "meeting god" and asking him why "he gave so much pain to people".

"Five-year-old baby girls are being raped by criminals and god is looking at these things sitting in Heaven. Therefore, there's no need of living in such a world," Jugsalai thana OC Ashok Giri quoted from Vikas's note.

Around 6pm, a local boy discovered the two bodies hanging from the unfinished structure. Rushing out, he informed others in the locality. As the news spread like wildfire, family members of the youths heard about the deaths and rushed to the spot.

Ramashankar Gupta and Manish Gupta, fathers of Vikas and Mukesh, have given their statements to the police.

Relatives of the duo said Vikas had become mentally unstable after his cousin Guddi killed herself, but did not elaborate why the young girl had decided to commit suicide. Mukesh, being very close to Vikas, was also moved by his friend's plight, they said.

"Vikas and Mukesh were close friends who spent all their time together. Who knew they would take such a drastic step driven by grief over Vikas's dead cousin," cried a relative.

Confirming this as a case of double suicide, Giri said they had sent the bodies for autopsy at the MGM medical college mortuary.
