Jamshedpur, May 27: One person was killed and over 40 injured in two separate accidents on National Highway 33 at Chowka today.

A middle-aged man died and two others received injuries when the jeep they were travelling in lost control, turned sideways and landed in a roadside field near a crossing at Ormal village around 1pm.

According to eyewitnesses, the jeep — which was on its way to Chandil from Tamar — was trying to avert a collision with a car coming from the opposite direction when the accident occurred.

Sub-inspector of Chowka police station Ram Awadh Singh said the dead was yet to be identified. “It appears that he hailed from Tamar. The man came under the weight of the vehicle,” said Singh, also the officer-in-charge of Chowka police station.

He added that the two injured, including the driver of the jeep, were rushed to MGM Medical College Hospital.

In another accident, about 43 people were injured when a bus carrying pilgrims was hit by a cement-laden speeding truck at Birlong village on NH-33 at 3am.

Police rushed the injured to MGM. Later, three of them, including the driver of the bus, were shifted to Tata Main Hospital after their condition deteriorated.

Sub-inspector Singh said the driver of the truck managed to escape.
