CALLING CLIMBERS: Dalma hills

Here's an opportunity for those who don't have the time to go on long treks. Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF) has decided to revive Sunday treks to Dalma hills from this winter.

TSAF secretary P.P. Kapadia said that regular Sunday trips to Dalma, which used to be conducted till 2013, was certainly a reality now.

"We are aware that there are many people who want to go for a trek to Dalma. There are people who can't afford time to join our outdoor leadership programmes in the Garhwal Himalayas or the many local stints. So, we decided to make Dalma trek a regular feature in our list of activities," he said.

TSAF will soon work out logistics of the trek, including registration fees and other details. "We need to take certain aspects - safety, transportation and food - into consideration. We are also planning to hold overnight camps and descend early Monday mornings. The security aspect needs to be taken into account seriously before launching the overnight camps. We'll also hold talks with officials of the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary," Kapadia said.

Outlining the Sunday treks, the TSAF secretary said participants would go uphill, have lunch and return by late afternoon. "It would be a structured programme. Our instructors will guide them to the top," he added.

TSAF launched Sunday Dalma treks in 2013 but these slowly turned irregular. "Actually, there was no dearth of participants. But, it became irregular because we could not arrange instructors who remained busy with our leadership programmes. This time, we plan to overcome this problem by hiring additional instructors (men and women) if needed," a TSAF functionary said.

Shedding light on the earlier trips, he said that participants used to assemble at TSAF office at JRD Tata Sports Complex at 6.30am before heading to NH-33 by bus. "They used to catch a designated route snaking uphill. We used to serve lunch packets before taking the downward journey by 4pm," the functionary added.
