Jamshedpur, June 11: Residents of Mango gheraoed a private nursing home in Sakchi this afternoon, protesting against the death of a 22-year-old woman allegedly because of wrong diagnosis.

Nikhat Sultana, a single mother of two, died within two hours of being admitted to the nursing home this morning.

Angry protesters were about to start ransacking the nursing home when Dr Umesh Khan, who had attended to Nikhat, reached the scene and explained about the “peculiarity” of her disease.

Khan even offered to conduct a post-mortem that would ascertain whether the woman had died because of wrong diagnosis or because of a rare disease.

After listening to the doctor’s arguments, relatives of the deceased gave in writing that they were not interested in conducting a post-mortem following, which the local police allowed them to take away the body.

Nikhat was staying with her mother Nasima Begam at Gaush Nagar in Mango. Nasima said that till last night she was fine. “Soon after Nikhat woke up in the morning, she complained of uneasiness. She was feeling nervous and getting frequently thirsty. She drank as many as 20 bottles of water between 6am and 8.30am. And as her condition started deteriorating further, we took her to Lifeline Nursing Home,” said the mother.

Nikhat was admitted to the nursing home around 9.30am. “During her treatment when Nikhat was being administered saline, she suddenly started screaming and jumped out of the bed. She seemed to be searching for water. The doctor attending to her gave her more drugs and after an hour she died,” said Nasima.

But Dr Khan contested her claim. He said: “I had never come across a case like this in my career of 30 years. She died of some rare disease and not due to wrong diagnosis.”
