Ranchi, Aug. 23: A Muslim socio-religious outfit, that was one of the interveners in the instant triple talaq case heard by Supreme Court, today rejected the ban on its practice, saying the judiciary could not interfere in the religious affairs of the Muslim minority.
Addressing a press conference in Ranchi, on a day when 25 women belonging to the BJP' sminority cell celebrated the verdict on Albert Ekka Chowk, president of the Jharkhand unit of Edara-E-Sharia Md Sayed said that the apex court opinion on the issue was based on the Quran and not on Islamic scriptures.
"We appeal to the court to review its decision because the decision was not taken in the light of Muslim law. The court did not go through the Hadis and other Islamic scriptures to reach the conclusion that instant triple talaq was illegal," Sayed said.
Edara-E-Sharia secretary Qutubuddin Rizvi said they discouraged people from taking recourse to instant triple talaq. "But nobody can intervene in our religious freedom," he added.
The outfit had also invited a number of Muslim women at the press meet to counter the prevalent notion that the ban on instant triple talaq had received overwhelming support from all sections of women.
The women, Khushbu Khan, Nikhat Kaushar and Shahina Parveen, said they were all opposed to the judiciary and the government interfering in their religious practices.
"Instant triple talaq is bad and even the Prophet doesn't approve. But once anyone pronounces it, then divorce is automatically done," Khushbu said.
Sayed said they were studying the court decision. "On September 30, the Central Edara-E-Sharia will hold a conclave in Patna to present our viewpoint to initiate further legal action," he said.
