Godda, July 19: The Godda district administration today submitted a supplementary inquiry report on the child marriage controversy embroiling state BJP chief Tala Marandi's son in a local court, seeking an order for a test by a medical board to ascertain the real age of the suspected minor bride.
Marandi's son Munna (22) married allegedly an eleven-year-old girl in Boarijore on June 27, triggering a controversy that tarnished the party image and prompted most senior BJP leaders and ministers to distance themselves from the state unit chief.
Amid furore across the state, the administration formed an inquiry team, led by Mahagama SDO Sanjay Kumar, based on records available at SDN Academy in Mahgama, where the girl studied. The school files suggested that she was born on 25/07/2005.
On July 2, Boarijore BDO Vijay Prakash Marandi, who also happens to be the child marriage protection officer, submitted an inquiry report in the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) court, seeking direction for further action. The court transferred the case to the Juvenile Justice Board.
Sources said SDM Ananda Singh, who also heads the juvenile board, then asked the BDO to file more details after talking to persons involved in the marriage, traditional tribal heads and cross-verification of the school documents. The BDO submitted the details today.
"We will wait for necessary directions from the court. The next date of hearing has not been announced yet," said SDO Singh.
Apart from Munna, his father Tala Marandi and father-in-law Bhagan Bask figure as named accused in the case. The court has been requested to initiate action against them under Sections 9, 10 and 11 of Prevention of Child Marriage Act.
Munna faces another case under Section 376 (rape) of the IPC and POCSO Act initiated on the basis of a complaint lodged by his alleged former girlfriend, also a minor.
The next hearing of this case will take place on August 2.
