Jamshedpur, July 19: For Loyola School students, devoirs and examen will soon replace everyday school terrors such as homework and exams.

In French, of course.

The school, known as one of eastern India’s top institutions, introduced French classes yesterday for its students to help them become global citizens.

In fact, in the pipeline are other foreign language classes so that students can be fluent in foreign tongues and easily explore international careers.

Currenly, the school has decided to offer foreign languages courses from classes IV to VI.

“With the world turning into a global village, there is a world of international opportunities waiting for talented people. The main objective of starting foreign language programmes is to prepare students for international opportunities,” said Fr Victor Misquith, S.J., school principal.

Around 130 students have already enrolled for French classes that started yesterday. The total duration for the beginners’ programme is 30 hours.

Classes would take place for an hour on Sundays only so as not to disrupt normal academic activities.

Students will be awarded certificates on the completion of the course.

“We are planning to launch a German language programme too, and are seriously looking for candidates with required expertise and experience to teach it. But the main problem is that only a handful of foreign language teachers live in the steel city and most are busy,” said Fr Misquith.

He added: “We are also planning to give French lessons to our faculty members. The school will offer also foreign language classes for students of higher classes also.”

French, German and Spanish are some of the most sought after foreign languages in the steel city after English.
