
Jamshedpur, July 29: Loyola School and hosts Carmel Junior College topped the table in the junior and senior sections, respectively on the opening day of the 5th Carmel Summit inter-school open chess tournament today.
Both Loyola and Carmel have so far garnered 12 points each after the third round at the Carmel school campus.
Loyola outplayed JH Tarapore School 2.5-1.5, while Carmel played a 2-2 draw versus Kerala Public School (Kadma) in the third round for the junior category
In the third round contest for the senior section, Loyola drubbed Tarapore Agrico 4-0, while Carmel defeated KPS (Kadma) with the same margin.
Others to post third round wins in the junior section included Sacred Heart Convent, who defeated Tarapore School 2.5-.5, while Motilal Nehru Public Schoo (MNPS) and DBMS English School played a 2-2 draw versus Mount Litera Zee School and DAV (NIT), respectively.
MNPS and JH Tarapore School also posted third round wins in the senior category, while the outing between Mount Litera Zee School and All India Women's Conference Centre for Excellence ended in a 2-2 draw. While MNPS outplayed DAV (NIT) 3-1, JH Tarapore posted a similar scoreline to win over DBMS English School.
Notable participants included current under-16 Commonwealth gold medallist Carmel's Vatsal Singhania, World School Blitz Championship silver medallist Sara Jain and Vidisha Roy, and senior state champion and Loyola student Anshul Nigam.
Vatsal was felicitated by Carmel principal Sister M Lini.
The three-day tournament was inaugurated by district superintendent of education Banke Bihari Singh in the presence of All Jharkhand Chess Association secretary Neeraj Kumar Mishra, CEO Pritam Singh and Carmel sports in-charge Pradip Mukherjee.
