Jamshedpur, June 25: Deep in love, Basanti Gorai didn’t think twice before fleeing with her boyfriend Ravi Gorai, whom her family didn’t approve of, on a couple of occasions.

And twice, she was outsmarted by her family, who wanted the teenager to call off the relationship. But she was adamant. Finally convinced that the girl was serious about her relationship, the 17-year-old was married off to Ravi at a temple in a function that was not attended by the bride’s father. That was two years ago.

The honeymoon didn’t last long. Basanti committed suicide last evening, allegedly after being tortured by her husband and in-laws for dowry.

Police have arrested her husband Ravi Gorai and his father Sadanand Gorai after Basanti’s father Ravindra Gorai lodged an FIR with the Adityapur police against the duo under Sections 498(A), 306 and 34 of the IPC last midnight. The sections pertain to harassment for dowry and abetment to suicide.

Basanti’s body was found hanging from the ceiling after the door to her room was smashed open by her relatives who suspected something amiss. She was a resident of Vidyut Nagar in Adityapur. The body was been sent for post-mortem this morning.

The autopsy report says Basanti was four months pregnant. The girl’s father received the body, with her husband and father-in-law remaining lodged at the Adityapur police station lock-up.

The victim’s father said: “I knew that my daughter would have to face such consequences. This is why I had opposed the marriage. Ultimately they forced my daughter to end her life.”

According to the sources, Basanti’s father was dead against of his daughter’s marriage but pressure mounted from friends and relatives and finally made him agree.

But after the marriage, Ravi Gorai allegedly demanded a fat amount as dowry. When the girl’s father expressed his inability to do so, the husband started torturing her.

The FIR says Basanti’s father-in-law, mother-in-law and other in-laws would subject her to taunts and force her into a depression.

On Tuesday afternoon, when no one was at home, Basanti locked herself in her room and hanged herself. She was reportedly extremely dejected because of the kind of treatment she was getting from her husband.

Her father-in-law Sadanand Gorai informed the police of the death late in the evening. In the meantime, the girl’s father reached the spot and complained that his daughter was compelled to commit suicide leading the police to arrest the two.

Sadanand Gorai said his son stayed in a rented house in Vidyutnagar near the railway station. “My son was on duty when the incident occurred. To my knowledge the girl has never been tortured for dowry,” he said.
