Do you feel like reporting things in your neighbourhood or city to highlight issues that haven't yet caught the eye of the mainstream media?

You can be a citizen journalist Reweyou app, launched last November and downloadable from Google Play Store.

The app, developed by five techies, including four 2015 graduates of IIT(ISM), Dhanbad, is not just a platform to report local concerns but also a way to get one's daily news fix.

Reweyou is the result of nine months of labour by IIT(ISM) graduates - Varun Pandey, Sukoushal Jain (both five-year integrated mining engineering students), Chitransh Jain (mineral and mining machinery engineering) and Rajwant Singh (applied physics) - along with a civil engineering alumnus of IIT-Roorkee Ayush Gupta.

Reweyou already has over 4,000 downloads across India and a network of some 150 active reporters who post news on a wide variety of topics from governance, infrastructure and crime to health, sports and education regularly.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Varun said theirs was basically an information network that could be downloaded from Google Play Store on any Android phone free of cost or accessed on www.reweyou.in.

"The whole concept of Reweyou is to promote citizen journalism where people read, report and review anything with the help of a picture, a 20-second video or GIF files. But the users must share factual information," said Varun.

He added they started working on the app in February last year. "Though the alpha (test) version of the app was ready in April last year, the full-fledged beta (final) version was launched in November," he said.

Chitransh added in order to ensure the news remains authentic and reporting transparent, users can interact with the reporter directly through comments.

"They can always ask about the source of the news or any other additional information as the app allows multiple-way communication," said Chitransh.

"We wanted to give power to the people who are willing to do their part in solving the problems that daunt all of us citizens and thus Reweyou was born," added Chitransh.

The content generated on Reweyou is available for all media houses across the country, further said Varun.

"We want the world to hear us and see us through our eyes," he said.

"We will also put the issues before the authorities conerned. In fact, as we grow bigger, we will approach authorities to be a part of our group of Reweyou to ensure timely redress," Varun said.
