Members of Jamshedpur School Vahan Seva Sanchalak Samiti, an umbrella outfit of pool vehicles that ferry students, on Wednesday launched an awareness campaign among drivers who often throw caution to the wind.
Association president Santosh Kuman Mandal said during the session at Ram Krishna Mission High School in Bistupur, drivers were asked to install window grilles and keep first aid kits. They were once again informed about maximum seating capacity in autos, vans and SUVs.
"We had conducted a similar campaign last July. Around 60 per cent pool van operators complied with our guidelines. We are trying to convince the others. While a van can carry 14 students, an auto shouldn't load more than 10 students," Mandal said.
The apex outfit has floated a fresh grievance number.
"People can lodge complaints at 0657-6510651. Drivers have been told that if complaints about violation of safety norms are received after February, we will hand over the errant vehicle's registration number and name of driver/operator to the administration (read traffic DSP or district transport officer) for action," Mandal said.
The Samiti functionary maintained that the campaign would continue till every driver was disciplined and students had a safer journey to and from campus.
"Every day, we will cover one or two schools during which our members will tell drivers and operators about importance of safety. We hope to cover all the 70-odd school by the end of this year or latest by February," Mandal added.
