Leaking loos reek of rush job

Unreasonable haste is a shortcut to error and modular toilets in the heart of the steel city seem to be its glaring examples.

Jamshedpur: Unreasonable haste is a shortcut to error and modular toilets in the heart of the steel city seem to be its glaring examples.

Installed only a month ago, apparently a rush job in the run-up to the pan-India sanitation survey, a urinal and a loo opposite the revered Shitala Temple along Sakchi-Mango road are already eyesores and olfactory challenge, thanks to faulty drainage and overflowing sewage.

The busy area hosts the district police hospital, market complexes and the Sakchi-Mango auto-rickshaw stand, and witnesses a daily footfall of over 5,000.

" Bahut badhbu aata hai (The place stinks a lot)," said Munnawar Hussain, an auto driver and resident of Mango. "Toilet ke charo taraf pani jama ho jata hai. Toilet ke andar thik tarah se paani nahi aata hai (There are sewage puddles everywhere. Water supply to the toilets is also inadequate)," he stressed.

As many as 37 community toilets, 27 public toilets, 12 modular toilets and 12 portable urinals have come up under Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) since 2017 to rev up the Swachh Survekshan ranking, the survey for which is underway since January 4 this year.

But, users claim that undue haste in installation has defeated the very purpose of some of these toilets, which have not properly been linked with underground water supply and sewer lines.

"The pre-fabricated structures needed to have their outlets properly fitted to sewer lines. Also, water tanks needed monitoring for regular refills. There is a problem with both. Let alone the sight and stench, the toilets along Sakchi-Mango road are breeding mosquitoes and diseases," said Shanker Thakur, a private contractor and resident of Sakchi Jail Road.

JNAC officials conceded glitches in water supply, but refused to admit that the nasty puddles were formed because of flawed sewer link.

"There is no problem with the installation of the modular toilets. There are some jobs remaining in terms of refilling the water tank near the modular toilets. There may be a leak in underground sewer lines in the area. We have spoken to Jusco (the area comes under the Tata Steel subsidiary's command) about it," said city manager (JNAC) Shakil Mehdi Anwar.

Spokesperson for Jusco Rajesh Rajan said he was not aware of any such problem. "However, if there is indeed a leak or problem in our sewer line, we will get it repaired at the earliest. The JNAC should first get to the root of the problem," he added.
