Ranchi, Nov. 13: Opposition leaders, led by JVM supremo Babulal Marandi and state Congress president Sukhdeo Bhagat, today staged a dharna in front of Raj Bhavan to protest against the state government's alleged land grab attempts and anti-people policies.
They warned the government against any amendment to the age-old tenancy acts (CNT and SPT), saying any such "misadventure" would trigger political turmoil in Jharkhand.
Bhagat and Marandi apart, senior Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay, JVM MLA Pradeep Yadav, state RJD chief Gautam Sagar Rana, state JDU president Jaleshwar Mahto, former Hazaribagh MP Bhubaneshwar Prasad Mehta and CPI(ML) secretary K.D. Singh, among others, took part in the three-hour-long protest.
"Poor villagers were killed in police firing in Ramgarh, Hazaribagh and Khunti recently. We have demanded judicial probe into the incidents," Marandi said.
Bhagat questioned the state's land policy. "The government is forcefully taking away land and paying pittance as compensation, violating the acquisition and rehabilitation act," he added.
Sahay accused the BJP of serving the interests of corporates, and urged the Opposition to unite for a joint fight against the ruling party.
