Colleges under Kolhan University will soon learn a new word — transparency.
The Chaibasa-based university has decided to ask colleges to set up RTS (right to service) display boards on campuses for guiding students on any kind of official work, thereby sparing them undue harassment by students’ unions and ensuring transparency.
The decision was taken at the university’s syndicate meeting last week.
Students and their parents, who often queue up at colleges for various purposes — like availing of college leaving certificates, migration certificates and marksheets — are known to be fleeced by student union members who demand money to speed up the process of getting the desired documents.
The RTS board, thus, promises to be of great help as it would clearly mention whom to approach for what problem and also stipulate a time and fees required for the job.
“It is an open secret that students’ unions in various colleges try to make the quick buck in the name of offering assistance to those who come for official work, be it to get admission forms or certificates. We want this trend to end and bring about transparency by putting up RTS boards,” said Rajiv Kumar, a syndicate member of Kolhan University and head of the physics department at Jamshedpur Worker’s College.
Appointment of public information officers (PIO) was also proposed at the university syndicate meeting so that the Right to Information Act could be implemented in all colleges.
“It was proposed that a PIO be appointed by the colleges and all updates, starting from admissions, should be made public in a bid to maintain transparency. This decision has to be implemented within a month,” said a senior university official.
A one-to-one interaction among university officials, students and teachers was also mooted to speed up pending work and help sort out students’ grievances. A university team will regularly visit colleges to interact with students.
The idea was to offer solutions on the spot, or else, a time period would be set within which problems would be resolved.
