Jamshedpur, Feb. 24: Karim City College has become the third college in the state to receive the prestigious College with Potential for Excellence tag conferred by University Grants Commission (UGC).

With this, Karim City has become the third college after Jamshedpur Women’s College and St Xavier’s College, Ranchi, to receive the honour. It is also the first affiliated college in the state to get the tag as the two others are autonomous institutions.

Karim City College is affiliated to Kolhan University.

“I feel elated because we have done our best to impart quality education. I think we deserved the tag and it is the effort of all, the faculty, staff and students,” said Mohammad Zakaria, principal of Karim City College.

Four colleges from the state —Karim City College and Graduate School College for Women from Jamshedpur, Ranchi College and Marwari Mahila College from Ranchi were vying for the tag this time. Only one among the four was chosen.

Last year, all four colleges were judged by officials of UGC and Ranchi University on several parameters like faculty, infrastructure, results, extra-curricular activities and facilities for students.

Karim City College will get to keep the tag for three years. During the period it would be eligible for a grant of Rs 60 lakh. Autonomous colleges get a grant up to Rs 1 crore.

“It gives me great pleasure to learn that a college under Kolhan University has performed so well. It can now use the grant for further development,” said Father Beni Ekka, vice-chancellor.
