Jamshedpur, Feb. 20: It was probably his concept of “no music” for a Doordarshan serial that clinched the deal.

Only in his early 30s, Harmu’s Vivek Asthana, a former student of St Xavier’s School and College, is on his way to share space with established players. Vivek’s musical compositions featured in the Indo-western fusion film, Valley of Flowers, directed by Pan Nalin an Indian director, who has found more fame in the international circuit for his two directoral ventures — Khajuraho and Samsara.

For Vivek, who has earlier composed scores for a film directed by Shyam Benegal’s unit and for low-budget parallel cinema and serials, this is his foray into the high-budget mainstream scene.

The epic romance Valley of Flowers with Milind Soman and Nasseruddin Shah as the main protagonists, and an equally stellar group of international stars, has a whopping budget of Rs 120 crore.

An excited Vivek spoke to The Telegraph from Mumbai. “Bagging such a huge offer was indeed a dream come true. The film has been made by an excellent director and has established stars from all over the continent and from India. And the film will be released in two languages — Hindi and Japanese,” said Vivek. For now the film has been doing the international festival circuits.

“It was an honour to share space with music director Rajesh Roshan who gave the main score,” says Vivek.

While our local lad composed three songs for the movie, Roshan did the rest, while Cyril Morin was responsible for the background score. “The director and producers had chanced upon my compositions for a 13-episode serial on Doordarshan where I had used a concept of ‘no music’. Soon I received a call to discuss their future projects with them,” says Vivek.

And the rest as they say is history. Valley of Flowers is slated to release in India this May.

“I am presently working on the title track and other tracks would be ready soon,” Vivek added.

This is not going to be Vivek’s first and final brush with Hollywood.

“I will be the solo music director for Satori, Nalin’s next venture to be made with a budget of $40 million,” he signs off.
