Jamshedpur, Jan. 19: Narah Angaria of Jharkhand emerged as overall individual champion in the boys’ Indian round at the finals of the National Tribal Archery Competition at JRD Tata Sports Complex today.

Lide Loyi of Arunachal Pradesh won the honours in the girls’ individual section with 575 points (out of 720). Her statemate Genung Tekseng took the second slot (568) while Meghalaya’s Paisuklin Pdahsei was adjudged third with a score of 540.

Archers grabbing top three positions in both boys and girls sections were handed cash prizes of Rs 25,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 15,000.

Narah, a cadet of government archery academy in Dugni (near Seraikela), scored 614 points (out of 720) to edge out Sikkim duo of Suraj Subba (610) and Yogesh Limboo (606). Though the 17-year-old failed to make his presence felt in the 30m distance, he notched the top slot in the 40m distance by scoring 314/360. The combined score of both the distances made Narah the champion.

The talented archer from Kharsawan compensated his poor show in the 30m distance, much to the satisfaction of coaches present on the occasion. “I am happy with my performance. But will put in more effort to improve my shooting skills,” Narah said.

Yogesh topped in the 30m distance with a score of 311, against 308 scored by M.R. Nabam Tapung (Arunachal Pradesh) and Suraj (Sikkim). Nabam was adjudged second on technical grounds.

Yogesh managed no position in the 40m distance while Suraj garnered 302 points to secure the second position and Sunderwell Marwein managed the third slot with 301 points.

The preliminary rounds of the nationals were held at Seraikela, Jabalpur, Shillong, Neharlag and Gangtok.

The competition was organised by Tata Steel in association with Archery Association of India (AAI) and ministry of tribal affairs. The proceedings were declared open by Jamshedpur MP Arjun Munda today. Indian archery coach for 2010 Commonwealth Games Limba Ram, AAI secretary general Paresh Nath Mukherjee and officials of tribal affairs ministry were present on the occasion.
