State pays homage to tribal martyrs

Chaibasa: Thousands of people, including politicians of regional and national parties, assembled at Siringshia valley, around 25 km away from the district headquarters on Monday, to pay homage to seven Ho tribals who were sentenced to death by the British on January 1 and January 2 , 1838 at Jagannathpur and Siringshia gorge.

Tribals of the area, led by Poto Sardar, had bravely taken on the British army in Singhbhum. Several British soldiers were killed. Poto Sardar and his closest aides — Nara Ho, Bora Ho, Pandua Ho, Debi Ho, Budaie Ho and Bhugni Ho — were, however, captured and sentenced to death.

Governor’s advice to scribes

Ranchi: Governor Ved Prakash Marwah on Monday asked the media to stop forming opinions based on handouts. Marwah was addressing the audience at the inauguration of a television channel here.

“These days journalists, who are burdened with too much work, form opinions and draw inferences from handouts. This is wrong. A journalist should do thorough investigation before writing on any subject,” the governor said. “Though investigative journalism is the need of hour and helps monitor the to functioning of government and non-government organisations, reporters should not forget his ethics and responsibilities,” he added.

Insult drives girl to suicide

Jamshepur: An 18-year-old girl, Avita Bala Mahjiyan, committed suicide on Sunday by consuming poison at her residence in Sunderpur village of Patamda block on East Singhbhum.

Police said Avita and her lover, Soumen Besra, had been rebuked by elders of the village for staying together without being married. “Ashamed, the girl locked herself in a room and consumed pesticide,” police said.

Science awareness

Jamshepur: Members of the regional centre of Science for Society have decided to observe 2004 as “Science Awareness Year.”

The decision was taken at a meeting at the Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP). District convenor of the society Sarita Anand said various science-related programmes would be organised throughout the year in schools all over East Singhbhum district. The society will celebrate National Science Day on February 28.

New bus stand

Jamshepur: BJP MP from Jamshedpur Abha Mahato on Monday inaugurated a new bus stand at Phuldungri in Ghatshila.

Mahato had donated Rs 24 lakh for the construction of the bus stand from her MP fund. Residents of Ghatshila had approached the MP for a bus stand at Phuldungri a long time ago.

Compensation

Jamshepur: Visthapit Mukti Vahini (VMV) on Monday criticised state government for not taking steps to compensate people displaced by the Subarnarekha Multipurpose Project.

“The state has announced a new rehabilitation policy. But there is no sign of it being implemented,” senior member of the VMV Ghyan Shyam said, adding that VMV will organise a meeting in the second week of February during which the organisation would discuss on the future course of action to put pressure on the government for implementation of the rehabilitation policy.

Name demand

Ranchi: The Federation of Jharkhand Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FJCCI) has urged the Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to name the Kadru bypass road Chamber Marg as the FJCCI office is located on that road.

In a letter to the RMC administrator, secretary Arjun Jalan said this would encourage traders all over the state and would also help traders from outside the state in locating Chamber Bhavan.

Sociology seminar

Ranchi: The Jharkhand Sociological Society and the post-graduate department of sociology (Ranchi University) will organise a two-day state level seminar in the capital on “Social Change in Jharkhand” on February 27 and 28.

The proposed panel themes are socio-cultural changes, economic changes and political changes in Jharkhand. The main objective of the seminar is to have initiate a dialogue between different sections of the people and to discuss their problems.

The seminar will also make suggestions for creating a new social order based on the principles of human dignity, universal value and mutual respect for each other, said coordinator Mithilesh Kumar.
