Jamshedpur races to winner's podium

Host Jamshedpur emerged champions in the 20th ASISC Regional Athletics Meet at JRD Tata Sports Complex in the steel city on Friday, with 191 medals, including 125 gold.

Ranchi had to be satisfied with runner-up trophy with 157 medals (90 gold, 45 silver and 22 bronze), while Dhanbad finished third (64 medals).

Ranchi, which led the table with 78 medals on the inaugural day (Thursday), could not keep up with their Jamshedpur counterparts who finally finished with a tally of 191 medals (125 gold, 54 silver and 12 bronze).

On Friday, the Jamshedpur team called the shots by slotting home 26 medals (9 gold,11 silver and 6 bronze) while Ranchi pulled in 23 (7 gold, 5 silver and 11 bronze) on a day which saw participants showing urgency for podium finishes.

Jamshedpur's Manoranjan Singh won early morning cheers after claiming the top slot in senior boys' 5km walk with a timing of 28 minutes, 9 seconds.

Home outfits D. Amrita Rao leapt 4.33m to bag the senior girls' long jump gold even as teammate Lokesh Murmu sprinted to the junior boys' 200m yellow metal, clocking 24:06 secs. Amrita also leapt 1.15m to slot home the senior girls' high jump yellow metal.

Steel city's Rahul Raj proved his mettle in the senior boys' javelin throw with a hurl of 44.47m while Joydeep Nandi added one more gold to the team's tally by acing the senior boys 4x100m (46.16 seconds) relay.

The promising athlete also claimed the senior boys 200m gold in 23.13 seconds.

Jamshedpur's Deepika Kumar Singh grabbed the 4x100m top spot in the junior girls' section by breasting the tape in 57.88seconds.

City mate Rachna Patel bagged the senior girls' javelin gold with a powerful hurl of 23.08m.

Ranchi athlete Ankita Kujur displayed her class by picking the senior girls' 200m gold in 28.28 seconds while teammate Vikas Kujur excelled in junior boys' 400m with a timing of 54.25 seconds.

Ankita also bagged the top position in senior girls' 4x100m relay (57.66 seconds) even as Suraj Munda pocketed the top spot in junior boys 4x100m relay by consuming 46.97 seconds.

Ranchi's Anand Yadav won one more gold in the junior boys 5km walk (28 minutes and 20.12 seconds) whereas his teammate Sanjay Oraon bagged the junior boys javelin title with a hurl of 42.25m.

Sanjay Lakra from Ranchi won gold by leaping 1.34m in the junior boys' high jump.
