IPL cheer spreads to capital Ranchi

Six-year-old's T20 gyan: Papa KKR fan, I love Dhoni. Whistle podu

Thirty-year-old Amitabh Sen, a businessman who lives at Kantatoli, placed an online order for two T-shirts: one of defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and the other of Chennai Super Kings.

Investment banker Sandeep Kumar and a bunch of his friends are planning to buy beer mugs: the idea is to pep up their IPL experience on television.

As the Indian Premier League-8 got underway with a big Bollywood bash in Calcutta, Ranchi's T20 fans got busy chalking out plans to join the fun - so what there are no matches scheduled at JSCA International Cricket Complex at Dhurwa.

Ask Sen why two different Ts, and his six-year-old son, Soumitra, chips in: "Papa KKR fan, I love Dhoni. Whistle podu." ?

CSK and KKR's first on-field battle is slated on April 28. But the Sen family can't seem to wait.

"My son is a big Dhoni fan. Last year, too, he made me buy a CSK T-shirt. This time, he forced me to buy one for myself. So, I chose KKR because my wife is a Shah Rukh fan," Sen said, as he got ready to catch Tuesday's opening at Calcutta on TV.

Banker Kumar recalled how his Morabadi flatmates dressed in yellow (CSK colours) last year and watched matches at the Ranchi stadium. "This time, we are planning to buy beer mugs of various teams. That way, my friends can choose and show off their allegiances," he said.

Incidentally, capital Ranchi keeps shifting its T20 loyalties. In 2013, KKR designated the Dhurwa stadium their second home ground. KKR played two matches against Royal Challengers-Bangalore and Pune Warriors.

But much to their disappointment, most of the 20,000 fans who turned up for KKR's first match in the capital, backed RCB. KKR garnered better support in their second outing the same year against Punjab.

A year later, KKR's exit made way for CSK, who chose Ranchi as their second home ground. That gave fans of skipper M.S. Dhoni enough reason to cheer for CSK.

But for Sports Authority of India (SAI)-Ranchi cadet Surendra Kumar, it wasn't an easy decision to choose a favourite team. The hockey player has been watching IPL since its debut.

"I haven't decided yet. There are many favourites this time as many top Indian players like Gautam Gambhir, Virendra Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh will be in action. But I have always liked Delhi after CSK," he said.

JSCA vice-president (districts) Manoj Kumar is clear about his loyalties though: M.S. Dhoni.

"At a personal level, we all support CSK simply because of our Mahi. Rest, it depends on whichever team plays well. The IPL action is getting more interesting with each season... lots of fresh talent suddenly becoming fan favourites. Remember Gujarat boy Akshar Patel last time. He stormed his way into the national squad thereafter," he added.
