Jamshedpur, Jan. 19: When Infy rains jobs, celebrations pour in.
The Adityapur-based National Institute of Technology (NIT) has recorded its all-time high in placements, with software major Infosys alone snapping up 57 students, highest in the tech cradle’s history.
But where the software giant scored in quantity, public sector unit National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) scored as far as pay package was concerned. Six lucky students got dream jobs with a Rs 9.8lakh per annum package, including perks. .
Close on its heels was Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), which offered a package of Rs 8.8lakh to 12 students.
Of 424 students, 317 have already been placed. So far, 42 companies including the core sector, software, communications and business solutions have participated in the placement process for the 2007-11 batch. Apart from Infosys, major recruiters include Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Arcelor Mittal, Ashok Leyland, Reliance Power, Maruti, ABB, Jusco, IOCL and NTPC.
More companies such as IBM, Tech Mahindra, Adnani Power, Wipro and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited have confirmed their participation in the recruitment drive, said .NIT director Rajnish Srivastava.
Infosys, the first company to visit NIT campus this year, yesterday offered annual packages of Rs 3.25lakh. Last year too, Infosys topped the list of recruiting companies, selecting 51 students.
College spokesperson Rajiv Bhushan said Infosys recruited most students — 28 in all — from the electronics stream, 17 from the computer science stream, six from masters in computer applications, one each from production and electrical engineering streams, and two from MTech. Tata Motors gave Rs 5 lakh, excluding benefits, while ArcelorMittal offered Rs 4.75 lakh.
First-time participants at NIT placement Renault Nissan and Rancore Technologies, handpicked five and nine students respectively. The former gave Rs 5. 5 lakh and the latter Rs 4.8 lakh per annum.
Students are understandably upbeat. “Placements have been good. We hope for a 100 per cent success rate this year,” said mechanical engineering student Ashish Tiwary, picked by IOCL.
“Placements have been truly impressive. About 80 per cent have been placed in top-notch companies. We hope to see all our students placed well by the end of the season,” Srivastava summed up.
