The student chapter of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration of IIT(ISM) has been adjudged as the best among 60 participants from around the globe at a contest held in Colorado, US, on February 22 as part of the SME Annual Conference and Expo.
Year-long activities, including paper presentations, seminars and conferences, guest lectures and interaction programmes, were the yardsticks by which the performance was judged.
"We have around 70 students in our student chapter of SME, but the core team comprises around 10 students led by Pritam Kumar Sinha, who was also selected as one of the young leaders of SME in the contest," adviser of the student chapter of the institute, Dhiraj Kumar, said.
"The second position in the contest was bagged by the University of Kentucky, while the third prize went to the host Colorado School of Mines," Kumar said, adding that the award was a recognition of the untiring effort of the students.
He said a final year student of mining engineering Saurabh Chaturvedi played a key role in organising the events for the society.
"I'm so honoured to have received the SME oustanding student chapter award on behalf of the society from the hands of SME president Tim Arnold," Sinha wrote in an email.
