Jamshedpur: Innovation is the key to success. Keeping this in mind a Ranchi-based incubation centre is organising workshops on robotics and civil engineering in schools to encourage scientific innovation among young minds.
A group of engineers under Culture Colab, a Kantatoli-based incubation centre, organised a robotics workshop at Tarapore School, Agrico, and Carmel Junior College, Sonari, on Wednesday
The incubation centre, which has been working on three main subjects namely digital education, incubation and innovation, has been organising similar workshops at Motilal Nehru Public School and Kasidih High School and across eight other schools in Ranchi, Ramgarh and Hazaribagh.
Around 60 students from Classes VI to IX of Carmel Junior College and 50 students from Classes IV to VIII of Tarapore School took part in the workshop, which mainly dealt with robotics 3D printing and structural designing based on different aspects of science, technology, engineering and maths.
The main aim behind the workshop was to motivate schools to set up tinkering laboratories on the lines of Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL) under Niti Aayog. So far only two schools in Jamshedpur have tinkering labs namely Jamshedpur Public School and DBMS English School.
"Our idea is to let young minds think beyond classrooms. In order to apply for ATL schools need to fulfil a lot of criteria and not every school gets selected due to lack of space and infrastructure. We are generally organising the workshops in schools that have not applied for ATLs and help students understand the different aspects of science and technology," said Vidisha Mishra, a mechanical engineer and member of Culture Colab.
During the workshop at Carmel Junior College, students tried to create models of house, staircase and Howrah bridge using Keva planks, a type of plank that helps to build structures with using any glue or connectors.
"We got an idea about building blocks like LEGO, WeDO and other programmes of civil engineering," said Class VIII student Arnav Shah.
" We have received a proposal from Culture Colab and if everything works out we might set up an a tinkering lab on our campus," said Ashu Tiwary, principal of Motilal Nehru Public School.
