Bhubaneswar, Sept. 22: After the magnificent Sun Temple at Konark, it could be the turn of the 11th century Lingaraj temple in Bhubaneswar and the 12th century Sri Jagannath temple in Puri to be recognised as world heritage sites.

The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (Intach) is making efforts to get the two temples into the Unesco world heritage list.

Intach chairman S.K. Mishra told reporters that the procedures were being studied.

Unesco recognised the 13th century Sun Temple as a world heritage site in 1984.

So far, 26 monuments in India have been recognised as world heritage sites.

Though Intach had conducted a survey of the area surrounding the Lingaraj Temple, the World Bank had expressed interest in commissioning a fresh survey of the area that would be undertaken by the architectural heritage division of the organisation, Mishra said.

To be recognised as a world heritage site, a monument should have an ?outstanding universal value?.

A cultural monument could be a masterpiece of creative genius, have great architectural influence, be associated with ideas or beliefs of universal significance or it may be an outstanding example of a traditional way of life that represents a certain culture.

Mishra said Intach had provided the necessary documents to be included as world heritage sites in case of Champaner-Pavagadh in Gujarat, Quila Mubarak, Patiala, Punjab, and the Victoria Terminus in Mumbai.

He added that Intach was involved in conserving property in remote corners of the country, including Ladakh, the Northeast and high mountains.

Mishra said the organisation had undertaken large-scale listing of heritage property across the country.

So far, it had listed about 70,000 monuments in 153 cities over 23 states, he said.

Conservation and restoration of natural heritage, including waterbodies and lakes, old paintings, ancient manuscripts and heritage property, were among the major activities of Intach.
