Jamshedpur, May 21: A police commissionerate is on the cards in Ranchi.
The state home department has prepared a proposal, which will be sent to the governor’s advisory council for perusal and necessary action.
Director-general of police Vishnu Dayal Ram said both Ranchi and Jamshedpur needed a police commissionerate as both the cities have swelled in all dimensions.
But Ranchi is the first priority. “The proposal for setting up the commissionerate in the capital will be finalised by May 25 and will be submitted to the advisory council soon after. Once through with Ranchi, we will follow the same process for Jamshedpur,” said the DGP.
Ram pointed out that they decided to form the commissionerate because of several reasons, including increase in population. Also both Ranchi and Jamshedpur have become important political and business hubs.
Talking to The Telegraph, Ram said that once the police commissionerates are set up, there will be more positions for police commissioners and more officers will get an opportunity to work effectively. “The scenario in the police department will change completely with the establishment of the commissionerate,” the DGP claimed.
Senior officers of the rank of joint commissioners and assistant police commissioners would be posted under each commissionerate. Several senior police officers would work on investigative cases and law and order would thus be maintained effectively, the DGP explained.
A senior police officer observed that ever since Naxalite activities have increased in the state, it has been an uphill task to maintain law and order.
“It is tough for superintendents especially. They have to look after the regular crime and also keep a tab on Naxalite activity in the interiors of the district. Usually, the head of the police department has to control two challenging situations in the city and the rural parts. Moreover, subversive acts like triggering landmine blasts only make the task difficult,” said the officer, on condition of anonymity.
