Jamshedpur: Saturday was a day less ordinary for steel city school students, as they took a break from books with three campus fests.
While two were grand inter-school competitions, one was an intra-school, intimate affair, more a treat for junior students by the senior-most class of the school.
From making toy cars run to strumming the guitar to R.D. Burman hits, over 500 students from 21 schools in the steel city displayed their talents at campus fest Hunch at Dayanand Public School, Sakchi, on Saturday.
The same day, DAV Public School in Bistupur organised Aurora, an inter-school English language fest with 13 students and 130 students.
Also, Gulmohur High School in Telco on Saturday held its intra-school competition titled Gulotsav.
At Hunch, where R.N. Sharma, chairperson of Jamshedpur Arya Samaj Trust, was the chief guest, students participated in eight events, including debate, battle of bands, anchoring, skit, dance, PowerPoint Presentation, powering cars with chemicals and making pencil sketches.
Overall champions were Little Flower School, followed by Loyola School and Narbheram Hansraj English School.
While some students intelligently used baking soda and vinegar to make small cars run a distance of around 15 feet, others drew pencil sketches on the topic "Everyone has to pay the price for what he does".
In the battle of bands, school students presented hit tracks of R.D. Burman from the 1970s and 1980s. Students formed their own bands and performed both single tracks and medleys.
Ankit Anand, a Class XII student of RVS Academy, Mango, said he had a great time in this round.
"I like to sing and perform R.D. is my icon. His hits are from my parents' generation but ageless," he smiled.
At DAV Public School, Bistupur, inter-school fest Aurora tested students' proficiency in the Queen's tongue. This year, Aurora's theme was Illuminating Horizons with five events such as spell bee, treasure hunt, literary quiz, debate and short story narration. Mount Litera Zee School won were overall champs followed by DBMS English School.
"The highlight of the event was storytelling by chief guest of the closing ceremony Sharat Chandran, director of Kerala Public Schools. He captivated the students with his narration. Fests such as Aurora offer a chance for students to know their skills in language and communication and the amount of hard work needed to polish their skills," said principal of DAV Public School, Pragya Singh. Social worker Sumita Nupoor was also a chief guest for the event's inauguration.
At Gulmohur High School, Class XII students organised an intra-school competition titled Gulotsav for juniors between Classes IX to XI, comprising quiz, dance and other events.
