Ranchi, May 8: It spanned for a period of 365 days, yet in the end the enthusiasts were left craving for more.

The year-long celebrations of Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary that is scheduled to culminate tomorrow has witnessed an array of cultural and educational programmes being organised by various organisations of the city in honour of the bard.

While the oldest cultural body of the city Union Club and Library remembered Tagore through musical programmes and discussions, Deshapriya Club went one better and organised exhibition showcasing the reproduction of works of the Nobel laureate.

“We organised competitions in Rabindra Sangeet and held exhibitions with reproductions of Tagore’s paintings,” said Asim Sarkar, joint secretary of Deshapriya Club.

He added that they, in association with the local branch of the Bengali Association, also held a discussion on the relevance of Tagore’s teaching in the contemporary world a few months ago. Union food processing minister Subodh Kant Sahay and Assembly speaker C.P. Singh, among others, had attended the programme.

However, Angar — an organisation of Coal India officials — outdid everyone in paying tribute to Tagore.

“We had a troupe from Shantiniketan, which staged the famous dance drama Chandalika. This apart, noted singer Rezwana Choudhury Banya also wooed the audience with her renditions of Rabindra Sangeet last November,” said Amal Debnath, director (technical) of CMPDIL, who is also the guiding force behind Angar.

Adding to the festivities was the arrival of the Sanskrti Express — the exhibition train on the life and works of Tagore.

A large number of students flocked the train during the first week of January and came out wiser about the life of the poet after the visit.

The celebrations picked up pace over the last few days, with Tagore enthusiasts celebrating the birth anniversary of the Kobiguru yesterday. The Bengali community will mark the occasion on Pochishe Baisakh tomorrow.

However, the followers of Tagore, despite all the revelries, seem a tad disappointed.

“We came across reports that the Meghalaya government had organised a cultural programme in Shillong to mark Tagore’s 150th birth anniversary. Why could our state not have done something similar?” lamented Arunagshu Brahma, a local scribe.
