Jamshedpur, Oct. 29: Rahul Banerji has once again done Jharkhand proud.

The Tata Archery Academy (TAA) member, who recently won the top slot at the World Cup in Turkey, has now clinched the Asian Grand Prix title at Manila, Philippines.

It was an all-Indian affair at the Grand Prix final. On a terrific Tuesday, Banerji edged out Rajib Basumatary of Assam to claim gold in the men’s recurve division. Seen in one of his best forms on the third day of the event at Manila University grounds, Banerjee — sibling of ace archer Dola who is part of the Indian recurve women’s group at Manila — beat his fellow Indian 113-109.

Banerji had defeated Dorji (Bhutan), Dao (Vietnam) and Li FC (Taipei) before putting it across to Basumatary, an emerging cadet of the TAA stable. Basumatary took the silver in the men’s recurve division with wins over A. Salem (Qatar), J. Dukapa (Bhutan) and Jantsen (Mangolia), said Sanjeeva Singh, chief coach of the national archery team in Manila.

Jhanu Hansda, a former archer of Tata Steel, lost to Ngain Aung of Myanmar in the women’s compound quarter-finals. Aung won 116-112. Hansda’s teammate Namita Yadav bowed to J. Chan of Philippines. Aung went on to win the gold while Chan bagged the silver.

Singh said India’s medal tally after the end of the individual championship men’s recurve and women’s compound on the third day was three golds, two silvers and three bronzes.

On Wednesday, the men’s recurve team comprising Banerjee, Basumatary and Adonda Raju clinched the team gold by defeating Myanmar 224-206.

The women’s compound outfit of Hansda, Yadav and Bhegyabati Chano also flaunted skills in the summit clash, defeating Iran 230-221. The team had edged out the fancied Philippines by eight points in the semi-finals.

Earlier, on Day 2, Rimil Biruly, a tribal archer from TAA, bagged the silver, losing by a narrow margin to Beijing Olympics rank four Kwon Un Shil of Korea. Dola defeated teammate Pratima Boro 107-100 to win the women’s recurve bronze.

Over 150 archers from 16 countries — North Korea, China, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, India, Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bhutan, Myanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Philippines — are participating in the championship.
