Ranchi, April 20: The capital was a witness to a two-day gold rush and the reason was all for prosperity and good luck.

The concept of Akshay Tritiya originated in South India where people bought gold as it was considered auspicious. And with even the Bachchan family believing in this tradition, could Ranchi be left far behind.

With Akshay Tritya falling on April 19 and 20 this year, jewellery shops were bustling with gold diggers busy shopping either for the wedding season or the auspicious day.

Gurwinder Singh, owner of the Tanishq showroom, said the day is believed to be the most auspicious for the Hindus. This jewellery outlet saw over 300 customers on these two days.

“Customers purchased Ganesh pendants, nosepins and small rings as a symbol for the sacred day. Prices were very reasonable starting from Rs 1,500 onwards. Hence it was affordable for all types of customers,” Singh added.

Every year in the south, people do not miss out on the opportunity to purchase gold on Akshay Tritya.

Since last year the occasion has made its way to the north and is now celebrated across the country, explained Singh, pointing out that however, dhanteras is not celebrated in the south.

Mohit Singh, who was seen purchasing Ganesh pendants and gold chains at a jewellery store in the GEL Church Complex, said he was not even aware that the day was auspicious.

“It was my wife who told me that buying gold today would bring prosperity throughout the year,” Singh added.

Another customer, Mahesh Nath, a businessman who was purchasing gold for a family wedding seemed delighted.

“My nephew is getting married today and what would be a better occasion to gift him gold jewellery. I had not known that this day holds so much importance,” Nath added.

A.K Gupta, owner of another jewellery showroom at GEL Church Complex, believed the gold rush has increased due to mass awareness and people buy gold to continue the tradition.
