Forget having computers or Internet at home, a lot of children from backward Godda have never been to school.
But that has not stopped an 11-year-old girl from the district from having her design splashed on the Doodle4Google website for the past few days. And if Lady Luck smiles on her and she ends up getting maximum number of votes in the nationwide contest for designing the best Google Doodle to celebrate Children's Day, her creation will be displayed on the Google homepage.
Bhumika Shree (11), a sixth grader from Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV), Godda, is among the top 12 finalists from across the country, who had to design doodles on the theme, "If I could create something for India, I will...".
Her creation, Economic Time Traveller (in picture), shows a time machine and carries the message: "This time machine will enable us to re-live the significant moments of past to learn from them and go into the future to forecast any upcoming disaster so that we can prepare in advance and safe (sic) our motherland."
The contest, in its seventh edition, is being held in three groups - Classes I-III, IV-VI and VII-X. While the top 12 doodles can be viewed on www.google.co.in/doodle4google/, public voting started from October 23. The national winner will be chosen from among the three standard group winners. The winning doodle will be displayed on the Google India homepage for 24 hours on Children's Day, says the website.
Elated that her daughter's artistic skills are giving her such recognition, Bhumika's father Manoj Singh, an engineer, said: "We were surprised when she showed us the Doodle4Google portal, which had her design in one group. Since childhood, our daughter has been very good in art work, we just encouraged to pursue her childhood passion."
The duo added that now, they were just praying that she received the maximum number of votes.
L.D. Yadav, principal of KV-Godda, is proud too. "I had already announced in the Assembly that students should vote in her favour. I think our votes have crossed over 500. We are expecting students from other schools to come forward and support her becoming the national winner," Yadav added.
Bhumika, who was attending her class, took out time to speak to The Telegraph. "I was really disturbed after the Nepal earthquake, which killed so many people. When I came cross this contest, I had already made up my mind to create a doodle on natural disaster," she said.
The doodles will be judged by cartoonist Ajit Ninan and art & craft wizard Rob. The winner will also receive a medal from Google, invitation to the award ceremony and a laptop.
Godda deputy commissioner Rajesh Kumar Sharma said: "We feel proud that a girl from Godda district, which is not very developed, is making her presence felt nationally."
