l Here is a school that focuses on both the syllabus and sports.
The school is DAV Shyamali. The school prides itself as one of the more progressive one that looks at the over all development of the child.
A teacher for DAV for years now, Shanta Mukherjee feels ?The child is not merely a reservoir into which information is to be poured. He or she is a complete thinking, feeling and acting being, that needs an atmosphere filled with stimulating activities, like performing arts, personality development programmes and the rest.
And keeping the over all development of the child in mind the school has recently started a Mathematics laboratory.
l There are more than 2,8535 books in the libraries. There are two libraries in the school? the general and reference libraries.
In the general library there are 2,8535 books including magazines like India Today, Reader?s Digest, Nandan, Competition Success, Outlook, Hindu.
The librarian of general library Namita Bhan said ?I would always encourage every student to read books. This is the best habit that any child may possess,? she adds.
l P. Khakha, in-charge of the primary section feels that the school provides an all-round development of the students.
?I am happy to be the part of this school. The school especially looks after the co-curricular activities which is regularly held for the students. We are also following the new CBSE changed pattern, which means there will be no examination till class V. The student's performance would be assessed through internal assessments.
l The school focuses on yoga, personality development, spoken English and drawing. Arts, as teachers believe, give an extra dimension to the character of the students.
Apart than art and crafts, there are also personality and story-telling competitions that are held regularly
l The dean, S.N. Thakur, associated with the school since 1984, feels that his is the best job in the world.
?I believe the quality of the students is the best in this school. We always try to do justice to our students and try to keep them up to date with the rest of the courses, but the school?s work is never done.?
As a dean of students? welfare he is always engaged in arranging activities outside the syllabus. ?We think it is best to invite personalities from different fields to provide counselling to the students. They also act as inspiration for the students,? added Thakur.
For all those science fans there are two chemistry labs, two physics labs, two-biology labs, one computer lab and one mathematics laboratory that will make the most cynical person happy with the facilities.
l The school does not have a canteen as of now. Rest assured soon there will be one, as students have been demanding it for a very long time, forcing the principal to consent to the idea.
l The DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir Alumni Association, which has for the while, become defunct but efforts are on, to reopen the association.
l It is one of the best school in the eastern region, which boasts, of excellent results and even better sports records.
The authorities take pride in the fact that the school churns out maximum number of engineers and medicos based in US and France and they have also formed DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Alumni Association.
l One of the achievements of the school has been the introduction of N.C.C training from the 1982-83 session.
One unit of boys called the Air Wing opened first after which the Navy Wing and Army Wing opened subsequently. The authorities hope in the near future to extend the facilities and introduce a girl's unit also.
l The school believes in the all-round development of the students. Therefore there are all kinds of provisions like football, basketball, chess, volleyball, table tennis and badminton. The students may also take part in track and field events.
l The school strives to inculcate a sense of tradition in the students. For this, they are often encouraged to chant the Vedic mantras. There is also a Sanskrit recitation competition that encourages the use of the age-old language among students.
