After winning accolades and standing ovations at various film festivals, Ranchi-based director Biju Toppo is all set to arrange for a special screening of his 28-minute documentary on human rights violations in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha for police officers and other stakeholders in the capital.
While the date of screening The Hunt is yet to be decided, the film will premiere on Doordarshan within a month.
"My documentary will be shown on Doordarshan and we will arrange for a special screening for Jharkhand's policemen and social organisations working for rehabilitation of the tribal poor," Toppo told The Telegraph.
The film reflects on and criticises orchestrated state violence against indigenous groups when they protest against development projects on their ancestral land. Rather than focusing on a single instance, Toppo has strengthened his venture by recording examples from all over the country like Odisha and Chhattisgarh, besides Jharkhand.
In each case, using the police force, the state has brutalised and killed protesters, often on trumped up charges of violence.
Apart from state brutality, Toppo has also shown how the threat of Maoist violence looms large on these people who are mostly tribals.
"Whether it is Kathikund block in Dumka or Dantewada in Chhattisgarh or Kalinganagar in Odisha, it's the same story everywhere. Tribals have to fight to protect their land in these mineral-rich states," said Toppo, who has bagged Rajat Kamal Award during the 58th National Film Awards for his Iron Is Hot and Ek Ropa Dhan in 2011.
Asked why he was so keen to show this documentary to the men in uniform, Toppo said, "I want to draw their attention to the grave injustice meted out local people so that they can provide adequate security, generate employment opportunities and enrol children into new schools."
Incidentally, the Public Service Broadcasting Trust had approached Toppo to make this film. "I started working on this project in 2013. Hopefully, like my other films, this too will jolt governments out of their slumber," he added.
The Hunt was shown during the 10th International Short and Documentary Film Festival - VIBGYOR - held in Kerala from February 16 to 21 and during the Kolkata People's Film Festival in January. At both events, the documentary earned critical acclaim.
