Jamshedpur, Oct. 21: Evaluators checking answer papers of Kolhan University’s Part I graduation exam have decided to continue their strike after talks with the authorities failed to yield result today.
About 25 examiners, under the banner of Teachers’ Association of Kolhan University, met acting vice chancellor Laksmisree Banerjee and other senior officials to discuss their demands of a hike in remuneration and proper disbursement of dearness allowance.
“We did not get a satisfactory reply and hence have decided to continue our strike. The university has to take a decision on our demands,” said Vijay Piyush, a member of Teachers’ Association of Kolhan University.
The meeting started at 11.30am and continued till late in the evening. In fact, the officials asked the teachers to form a three-member committee at the spot and discuss the expenses of the university to see whether the evaluators could be paid more than the current remuneration, that is Rs 7 per answer sheet.
“The three-member committee deliberated on the matter for two hours and came to the conclusion that our demands were justified. But the controller of examinations said that the university had a number of hidden expenses that could not be ignored. We could not discuss the matter further as several key officials had left,” Piyush added.
The vice chancellor said: “We are trying to amicably settle the issue.”
More than 400 evaluators are on strike since October 6.
The Part I graduation results of about 20,000 students will be delayed if evaluation work does not start soon.
“We are discussing the matter. As of yet, we have not come to a conclusion,” said S.C. Das, the controller of examinations.
The vice-chancellor added: “We are trying to amicably settle the issue.”
The teachers alleged that Kolhan University had outsourced a number of activities like result publication and setting question papers, which involved huge expenses, but were not ready to pay evaluators more.
