DPS leads in chess tourney

Dhanbad, Dec. 26: The 27th Dhanbad District Open Chess Championship, which began at Agrasen Bhavan in Dhanbad yesterday, witnessed the second round today.

Altogether 88 players, including 50 in the junior category and 38 in the senior category, are participating in the six-day championship.

Co-ordinator Mukesh Sinha said that the junior category was further divided into various sub-groups on the basis of the ages of the contestants — Under 7, Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17.

Players aged more than 17 years have been placed in the senior category. Furnishing results of some of the matches held today, Sinha said Aishwarya Kumari of Delhi Public School, Dhanbad, defeated her opponent Vijay Kumar of the same school by 2-0. Aishwarya also won the All-India Inter DPS Chess Championship.

Another player of DPS, Dhanbad, Suraj Rudra, defeated Amit Soni by a score of 2-0, while Ishita Singh of DPS Dhanbad defeated Pratik Agarwal of ISL, Jharia.
