Jamshedpur, July 9: After running the underworld for the past decade, Dilip Singh alias Kallu Singh is trying his luck in the Bihar Legislative Council election slated for tomorrow.

With 18 criminal cases pending in the East Singhbhum district, Kallu Singh’s background is being verified by the Bihar police. The criminal filed his nomination from Gaya.

The additional superintendent of police, Gaya, has sent a query to the East Singhbhum police inquiring about the aspiring MLC’s background.

Deputy superintendent of police, headquarters-I, M.P. Lakra said he would send the reply to the Gaya police.

“We are going to respond to the query. We are left with no option than suggest that the prospective MLC from Gaya Kallu Singh is wanted in as many as 18 cases,” he said.

The DSP said they are collecting information on Kallu Singh from the prosecution and would be sending the reply to the Gaya police soon. He said, “As far as police records are concerned, except Kallu Singh, all other members of his gang are out on bail. Kallu Singh is an absconder in the police files.”

Kallu Singh has survived wars between Saheb Singh-Birender Singh’s Garamnallah gang and the groups of Sahbuddin-Hidayat Khan-Muktar Ansari that rocked the city, Rohtas and Azamgarh in the early Nineties.

Saheb Singh was killed in a police encounter in Sherghati at Rohtas district of Bihar, whereas Birender Singh was shot dead by the Muktar Ansari gang at Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, leaving Kallu Singh to lead the gang.

But the Garamnullah gang started closing ranks with Uttar Pradesh don Brajesh Singh’s group in the mid-Nineties.

Like Kallu Singh, his rivals had also political ambitions. Some of them have even managed to get elected to the Assembly.
