Ranchi, July 16: The Jharkhand Medical Council’s request to doctors registered with the Bihar Medical Council to get themselves re-enrolled has gone largely unheeded.

Even after almost six months of the setting up of the Jharkhand Medical Council, only 18 doctors have got themselves registered. Half of them have done so to gain eligibility to contest elections for council posts.

“We have been requesting the medical fraternity ever since the constitution of the council to get themselves registered so that the council has full information about doctors in the state,” council officials said.

After the constitution of the Jharkhand Medical Council on January 28, all doctors registered with the Bihar Medical Council were asked to apply for permanent registration with the Jharkhand unit.

Council officials, however, said it was not compulsory for the doctors to get themselves registered with the state body. “But it will be beneficial to the doctors if their details are kept in our records. The Medical Council is not just for registration. It also takes up cause of the medical fraternity. The council ensures that the code of conduct and medical ethics announced by the Medical Council of India are followed in letter and spirit,” officials said.

However, about 70 fresh medical graduates have applied so far for temporary registration. The council had made it mandatory for all fresh medicos passing out after March 29 to get registered in Jharkhand instead of Patna.

Jharkhand Medical Council registrar Amar Kumar Singh said: “If the government is not pressurising doctors to register how can we do so? We cannot force doctors having permanent registration in Bihar to get themselves registered with us. But their cooperation would help us a lot. The permanent registration charges have been kept nominal.”

The medical council has 11 members and its term is one year.

At present there are three vacant seats in it. Three members have been appointed by the state government — M.O. Horo (retired deputy director, health and medical education department), S. Haq Nizami (director,Central Institute of Psychiatry, Kanke) and eye specialist B.K. Verma.

There are ex-officio members too in the council.
