Ranchi, Nov. 1: If you thought “Diku” was a term exclusively used to describe outsiders during the separate statehood movement in the past, you are wrong.
Diku or DIKU is also the chat acronym for “Do I know you”. That was one of the posers at the inter-school IT quiz held at St Xavier’s School, Doranda, in Ranchi today. A three-member team each from 18 capital schools took part in the competition that was held by the cradle’s IT department.
After a preliminary written round that had 30 questions, six teams qualified for the final. They were St Francis School, Kairali School, Loreto Convent, Jawahar Vidya Mandir (JVM), Shyamali, and St Anthony School, besides the hosts.
The final had six rounds — general IT awareness (multiple choice), identifying IT personalities, chat acronyms, company slogans, pick and bid and programming.
Quizmaster Santosh Kumar lobbed questions like which company had “Don’t be evil” as its slogan”, which year “@” was chosen for e-mail address, what does XD mean as a smiley, what are CMOS and EULA and what was the first computer to have graphical user interface (GUI).
If you are still wracking your brains, here are the answers — Google; 1972; laughing; Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor and End-User Licence Agreement; and finally, Xerox Alto.
In the identifying IT personalities round, the quizzards showed mixed knowledge.
The team from St Xavier’s School, comprising Ayush Kumar, Shreyaj and Pulkit Jain, maintained the lead from the beginning and eventually became the winner, bagging 120 points.
With 70 points in its kitty, JVM, Shyamali, bagged the second position while the third spot went to Loreto Convent that scored 45 points.
Father Ajit Xess, principal of the host school, handed over certificates, besides medals and pen drives to each member of the winning teams.
“The quiz is an annual feature and the standard of participating students is rather good though some need improvement,” was the verdict from quizmaster Kumar.
